egrets in the backyard

Egrets in the backyard

January 23, 2020, Davis, CA

Almost every morning, this time of the year, their are five or more egrets on the fairway feeding.  The rain, soaking the soil, brings food to the surface.  I’ll have to do some research to find out what that might be.  It’s nice to look out the sun room windows and see these big, beautiful birds,

they walk slowly, looking intently at the ground, and then grab and swallow.  Nothing like a cold worm on a foggy morning,

I’m glad they’re happy and finding plenty to eat,

and that’s the way the morning started off today.

sights in Davis and adding AC to the river house

Sights in Davis and adding AC to the river house

January 20, 2020 Guerneville, CA

I ride by this apartment complex that’s under construction almost every day.  It’s getting nearer to completion and they moved out the supervisor’s trailer and it revealed this sign,

Couple of interesting things on the sign.  The complex was designed to be a net zero energy user and the architect is Jim Zanetto.  Years ago I had Jim do some work for me when I lived in Winters.

When I was in high school we used to joke about being able to lift the Apian Bell.  That was the name given by I don’t know who to these things,

Railroad freight car axles.  The word was they weighed over 600 pounds.  I have no idea if that’s true or not but they look heavy.  Getting a grip on one would be a challenge.

Here’s some good advice,

You know it would be parked by the Co-op.

We are having AC added to the house at the river.  It gets mighty hot on summer afternoons because of all the glass on the west facing side of the house.  Should of done this when we replaced the heater.  Better late than never.  Here are some photos of the work in progress. This is the plumbing wrapping around the back wall,

And here are two pictures of the condenser in place,

The location relative to the window,

That’s the way it is today.

winter tree trimming in Guerneville

Winter Tree Trimming in Guerneville

January 15, 2020 Guerneville, CA

The winter tree trimming in Guerneville is done.  Here is the Japanese Maple at the pergola,

Next are the joined Roman Cypress on the path to firepit.  Nicely trimmed up,

And the persimmon,

And, finally, the fig,

And that’s the way it looks at the middle of January 2020.  The olives are looking good too.
